Dump Truck overturns and loses its load

By Chief Ira Brown, Jr
November 17, 2020

A dump truck overturned and lost its load of dirt at the intersection of Highways 445 and 190 today at 11:53 am. Both highways were limited to one lane of traffic for over two hours. Firefighters treated the driver on scene prior to him being transported to North Oaks Hospital by Acadian Ambulance. Another vehicle waiting at the red light headed towards Hammond was pushed off Highway 190 into the ditch by the power of the spilling dirt. That driver was uninjured.

Firefighters had many things to consider and deal with at the scene. First and foremost was scene stabilization, the treatment of injuries, fluid leaks from the dump truck, traffic control, and notifying the proper authorities to remove the obstructions. Firefighters used the spilled dirt to create a dike around the leaking fluids.

Once the dump truck was righted and moved out of the intersection, DOTD used a small track hoe to remove the dirt. The asphalt was damaged in several places by the dump truck.

We realize that being stopped in traffic is a huge inconvenience; however, please keep in mind that the firefighters conducting traffic control are under the control of Law Enforcement Officers, in this case the State Police.
