Ponchatoula, La. – The Eighth Ward Volunteer Fire Department is better equipped to keep all community members safe thanks to a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The $13,596.42 grant will be used to purchase the Stryker Lucas 3, v3.1 Chest Compression System, fulfilling a critical need within the department.

Chief Ira Brown anticipates this device will be placed into service once it arrives. “CPR situations are chaotic with many moving parts at the same time. He said that the Lucas will release a responder(s) from performing chest compressions and allow them to conduct other required tasks.”

“We are committed to helping organizations such as Eighth Ward VFD continue their lifesaving work within local communities. We are honored to be able to award this grant and do our part to ensure that the Eighth Ward coverage area is safer for everyone, including first responders,” said Robin Peters, executive director, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The Lucas 3 is an easy-to-use mechanical chest compression device that helps lifesaving teams around the world deliver high-quality, guidelines-consistent chest compressions to sudden cardiac arrest patients; in the field, on the move and in the hospital.

The Lucas enhances team efficiency to assist in calming chaotic scenes and enabling caregivers to focus their skills and judgment where they matter most. When the LUCAS is in use to handle proper chest compressions, responders can focus on other life-saving tasks and speed diagnosis and treatment of underlying conditions.

The grant was one of 96 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded to public safety organizations across the country during the most recent grant application period. The 96 grants total more than $1.8 million.
